what’s next

This won’t be news to you if you’ve read every word of our site (who are you?!). For everyone else, we thought it would be helpful to outline what we think we’ll do or build from here.

We’ve launched seven tools:

  • VSS ideals, which is a super simple checklist of sorts for sustainable architecture

  • On surplus, where we outline the goals of reducing surplus and employing vernacular trends and environmental design processes

  • Core prevention and adaptation markers, a list of individual commitments that is furthered in the

  • Future proofing code, a more detailed code of conduct

  • On capital, where we highlight the interdependencies of sustainability on more than simply natural capital

  • Design algorithms to demonstrate how sustainability can inspire form

  • ARC Model, a checklist or formula for designing with resource conservation in mind

We see a few obvious next steps:

  • Expand upon some of the tools, especially norm to form. We’ll publish more design algorithms and a spreadsheet version of the algorithms, to start. Some of the tools might benefit from longer discussion or explanation, too, which we’ll probably do from our blog. The ARC Model, for example, is possibly the best suited to master planners but—especially alongside individual codes of conduct—that might not be clear enough.

  • Continue to engage with data scientists on some of the design problems that might best benefit from use of large data sets.

  • Begin an illustration library. Somewhere between the two ideas above is the idea of expanding on visual examples, both for our own learning and also as part of a labeled data set that could be used to train a model.

  • Chat to other potential contributors.

  • Respond to feedback—keep it coming.

What are we missing?
